Summer Vacation 2024 & the State of Counterpact

For the very few of you who still pay attention to this game, you may have noticed Counterpact has become painfully inactive as of this year. As the developer, I did all I could, well beyond just wasting two years developing a game that I got next to nothing out of. I had tried to give people what they want, I tried to hold people's hands to an unreasonable degree, I tried to remain active and welcoming in the community, I tried to reach out to people to help the game get some sort of actual exposure, and more. The vast majority of people who played were only looking for the next new (and likely free) thing, and had no intention of actually learning anything or sticking around. The game will not appeal to everyone, but it did seem to have a generally positive response when it was active, which makes its inactivity even more disappointing. Nothing worked, and despite having what I thought was a low bar for "success", the game ended up being a failure.

The breaking point was the Lunar New Year 2024 event. Despite considerable work being put into this event, including brand new gameplay content that was unlike anything that had been added prior, the event saw very little activity. In fact, the turnout for the Lunar New Year 2024 event was lower than any other event in Counterpact's history, even during Counterpact's "closed" alpha testing. It appears as though no amount of work, no amount of content, and no amount of catering is going to improve the activity of the game. As such, and partially in direct response to the pitiful lack of activity during the Lunar New Year 2024 event, it is clear that content updates are not worth the time and effort, nor is work on the game in general.

With all that said, you may have noticed the official servers went down some time ago. More recently, the lobby server has been shut down as well. These cost money to run; while the donations are much appreciated, they do not come near close enough to cover server costs. Furthermore, it just seems like a waste to spend so much money on a game nobody cares about. Given that Steam servers were implemented a while ago, these will become the only way to play Counterpact (aside from direct IP connections). Just to be clear: Despite everything, the game is not being shut down, and the account server will remain accessible. However, matchmaking and the IP-based lobby server have been shut down, and content updates are indefinitely put on hold. This also means that the Spring's Celebration and Autumn's Welcoming events will not be hosted for the foreseeable future, due to their current lack of content. In the unlikely scenario this actually improves in the future, these features may be reinstated.

Summer Vacation 2024:
The Summer Vacation 2024 event is now live, decorating maps with summer ornaments and enabling the Summer Sportsball metagame. Due to crippling inactivity and lack of interest from the community, few items have been added this year. The event will run until August 1.
  • New Summer Sportsball Memento:
    • Neon Participation Medal
      • This Memento will be reused in the future if the game remains in its current state.
  • New Summer Vacation Gashapon Items:
    • Personal Shade (Common Outfit)
    • Squiblie (Common Pet)
    • Hearty Snack (Common Heartbeats Weapon Skin)
    • Burger Keychain (Uncommon Donator Item)

Miscellaneous:
  • The lobby server has been shut down; the server browser will now only display Steam lobbies.
  • Matchmaking has been disabled.
    • This is partially due to the inactivity resulting in it not serving its intended purpose to begin with, but is also due to the fact that matchmaking was handled by the lobby server. As the lobby server has been shut down, matchmaking can no longer be performed.

April 3, 2024 Patch

March 19, 2024 Patch

Bug Fixes:

  • Dolly the Puppet can no longer be selected through the number keys if she is not enabled.
  • Fixed an issue where standing on the Security Cell as it times out would sometimes result in picking it up instead of it being properly reset.
  • Fixed an issue where hovering above the matchmaking popup with vertical margins would cause the popup to constantly move.
  • Character filters no longer apply when equipping items.


Miscellaneous:

  • Bestowal's description now properly states that it is from the Lunar New Year 2024 event.
  • Work In Progress' spinning sawblades now have a separate event feed icon.
    • This will not retroactively apply to demos from before this patch.
  • The Grub Tourney Medal memento has been rewarded to winners of Counterpact Competitive League Grub Tourneys.

February 18, 2024 Patch

Balancing Adjustments:
  • Lunar New Year Firecrackers now detonate at a slightly faster speed.
  • The warning radius of Lunar New Year Firecrackers now grows at a much slower speed.


Bug Fixes:
  • Snail Pulse now properly drops a heal pickup upon being destroyed again.
  • Decorative fireworks are no longer affected by demo playback speed.

Happy (Belated) Lunar New Year!

It may be a little late, but it's finally here. The Lunar New Year event is now live, and will end on March 6! During the event, you can obtain a variety of items from the Lunar New Year Gashapon and "scare" your enemies away with firecrackers!

Balancing Adjustments:
  • Only one instance of Snail Pulse will spawn per floor.
  • Graverobber's healing treasure now has a higher initial healing rate and minimum healing rate, but a quicker healing rate decay.
  • Heartbeats now inflicts double heal fatigue when healing allies with its attack.
  • Work In Progress spinning sawblade now deals more damage per hit.
  • Work In Progress oil now reveals hidden players.

Bug Fixes:
  • Fixed misplaced keychains on Shiniko the Reaper's Dollification.
  • Work In Progress spinning sawblades are no longer instantly destroyed in demo playback.
  • Players should no longer appear to be stuck in respawning due to packet loss.
  • Autobalancing is no longer executed on servers with custom team limits.

Miscellaneous:
  • The sound of Work In Progress spinning sawblades has had its volume decreased.

January 2024 Update

Thank you for playing Counterpact! Hopefully, you continue to enjoy the game. This update brings quite a few bug fixes and quality of life features, as well as a new weapon for Loie the Inker!


New Content:

  • New Loie the Inker weapon: Work In Progress
    • This Defense weapon may not pack as much of a punch as some of her other weapons, but it can still cut through the competition (quite literally)! The sawblades it shoots penetrate enemies when initially shot, and can deny a small area upon hitting the environment. You can shoot oil at your enemies to make them slip into the sawblades, causing  them to be ignited when they get hit!
  • New Gilded Gauntlet: Origins
    • Here's a not-so-friendly reminder that this is, indeed, a bullet hell. It's just you against Gale... and Gale? And also Gale? Let's hope your dodging skills are sharp!
  • New Gilded Gauntlet Item: Shiniko the Reaper's Dollification


Balancing Adjustments:

  • The lower difficulties of the Gilded Spire no longer increase enemy attack delay, but instead decrease enemy health.
    • The intention of this change is to emphasize the bullet hell focus of the Gilded Spire, as there seems to be common misunderstandings about what the Gilded Spire actually is, which in turn seems to lead to inefficient playstyles.


Bug Fixes:

  • Players who have not completely connected no longer appear on the scoreboard or in disconnect messages.
  • Melee attacks no longer hit intangible enemies.
  • Supernova missile detonation is now properly affected by delta time.
  • Fixed an issue where the first unfavorited inventory emote and chair (the latter always being the Kitchen Chair) were being used as the default items in their respective menus.


Miscellaneous:

  • The AutoCam now prioritizes following the Security Cell in the Keepaway mode, so long as the Security Cell is not at "home".
  • The "PlayerBypass" setting can now be added to the "Server" section of the INI to allow server hosts to set a player limit larger than 16.
    • This setting is "secret" as large player numbers may have adverse effects; server hosts are responsible for any issues that are caused by using this setting.
    • For security purposes, the internal limit is still capped at 50 players.
  • KO streaks are now displayed on the scoreboard.
  • Certain important buttons on the main menu and in-game menu now appear with different colors.
  • Attempting to view the Gilded Gashapon's contents without having the Gilded Gauntlet unlocked will now display information about how to unlock the Gilded Gauntlet.
  • An option has been added to adjust how long chat messages remain before fading out.
  • An option has been added to automatically kick players who remain as spectators without chatting for extended periods of time.
    • This is primarily to combat an issue where players would queue into matchmaking, then proceed to never join a team or participate in the game in any way, resulting in heavily lopsided games and generally wasting time for all those involved.

January 2, 2024 Patch

Bug Fixes:
  • "NPC" no longer appears after Wardens are suddenly removed.
  • Fixed an issue where some localization tags were not properly being sent by the account server.
  • The Shop and Gashapon popups for new players no longer appear when the player is in the Gilded Spire, but has not yet selected a character.
  • Custom settings will now properly set the collision masks for custom assets.

Miscellaneous:
  • Unarchiving all items now displays a confirmation popup.

Counterpact's Official Launch is Here!

After a little over two years of development and a considerable widening of the game's initial scope, Counterpact has finally launched! One last thank you to everyone who was here before launch; it was because of your collective efforts that the game was able to grow as much as it did. Of course, the game will continue to grow!

For those of you who may have just found the game for the first time: Welcome! Hopefully you enjoy the game, and maybe even stick around for a while! There's a lot to check out with even more content to come over time, including six holiday events a year!

Since Counterpact is no longer in its development phase, the Development Gashapon is finally gone. It had a nice, long run (a year and a half!), but it's finally time to put it to rest. New Development Gashapon items are no longer obtainable; the only way to get them is by trading with other players.

Lastly, this is technically an update, so there are some patch notes to share with you all...


New Variety Gashapon Cosmetics:
  • Class Clown (Uncommon Reaper Outfit)
  • Malevolence (Uncommon Angel Outfit)
  • Delicate Silk (Uncommon Inker Outfit)
  • Clown (Common Emote)

Balancing Adjustments:
  • Graverobber can now dig up treasures on platforms.
  • Graverobber treasures now land on platforms.

Bug Fixes:
  • Fixed an issue with Antique Lifeguard shields and enemy outlines.
  • Items with unique recycling returns no longer cause the large font to be used for the price in the Shop.
  • Fixed an issue where the last used emote and last used chair were being improperly set after an inventory adjustment if the last used emote or chair was not favorited.
  • Damage areas no longer discredit players for KOs.
  • Searching for multiple terms no longer causes no items to appear after recycling an item.
  • Fixed an issue where attacks and abilities would sometimes be disabled upon spawning.
    • Previously, this was most easily circumvented by clicking outside of the game window, then clicking back in.
  • Shazia the Dream's attack animation should now work properly with delta time.
  • Shazia the Dream's grapple speed now works properly with delta time.
  • Large downloads directly from the server should no longer timeout after a certain amount of data has been received.

Miscellaneous:
  • The shop button now indicates when new items are in stock, and the new items themselves are indicated within the shop.
  • When obtaining enough Eclipsium, new players will be pointed to the shop and gashapon with brief explanations.
    • This will also appear for older players as well; however, it should only appear once.
  • Chairs are now affected by delta time.
  • External custom assets (sprites and sounds) can now be loaded from a .ZIP file via custom settings.
    • Due to certain complications regarding this addition, demos will not be recorded while playing with external custom assets until further notice.
  • Loser weapons can now be disabled via custom settings.
  • Shazia the Dream's Gilded weapons now have unique binding sprites.
    • This also applies to the Development Hypnotic Chain skin.
  • The Goliath Doll, Gale Doll, Gamble Doll, and Luster Mite Doll now appear as their Dusk counterparts while the player is on Team Dusk.
  • Specific variables within weapons, players, and projectiles can now be made exclusive to Dawn or Dusk.
    • This is particularly useful for "adding" characters that are accessible by both teams, but need to be visually distinct as a result.
  • Tips will now be provided in the in-game chat after being KO'd.
    • This is obviously intended for newer players, and can be disabled in the Options menu.

December 17, 2023 Beta Patch

Note: Unless there are any glaring issues that suddenly come up, this will be the final update before Counterpact's official launch on December 31! To those of you who have stuck around all this time, thank you for your support. However, this does mean that the Development Gashapon will be leaving soon, and the items within will no longer be obtainable. Hopefully you are satisfied with what you have.


Bug Fixes:

  • Performing actions within your inventory properly returns you to your previous page again.
  • Delta time no longer negatively affects jump height.
  • Certain visuals no longer cause underwater bubbles to fade out "randomly".
  • Clients should no longer timeout while downloading larger maps directly from the server.

Balancing Adjustments:
  • Unfathomable Fury's attack damage has been reduced.

Miscellaneous:
  • Lifeguard's shield is now affected by item attribute filters, such as the Antique filter.
  • Unique item icons have been added for Eclipsium bundles.
  • Eclipsium bundles (and other items with "abnormal" recycling returns) now display how much is gained when recycling them on their item icons.
  • Delta time has been implemented for important aspects of the game.
  • The "Search" button has been removed from the inventory; text searching will now be performed automatically.
  • Players can now search for multiple terms in their inventory by separating each search term with commas.
  • Spacing has been added to Shortcake's background, better displaying the details on the sides of the background.
  • The space between the edges of the water fountains and the ground on Treecave Greenhouse have been made solid.
    • This is to prevent smaller players from going under the edge of the fountain and getting "stuck".
  • Official map checksums are now run at the time of loading the map, instead of storing the checksum when the game is booted.

Happy Festive Season 2023!

 


The end of another year is closing in, and that means a lot of things... but to those of us who have been split into identical counterparts, it means the Festive Season is upon us again, running until January 2! Of course last year's items and the Holiday Rush metagame will be returning, but there are a few new items this event brings too! And just like with the Halloween event, this year the items will be in their own gashapon. There is also a set of festive weapon skins to collect for a cheaper price, so be sure to check those out too! Don't forget the stocking stuffers; every player who logs in during the event will get a free Frozen KOunter!

There's something special about this particular event though; this will be the last holiday event of Counterpact's development phase! That's right, the game will be launching very soon (by the end of the month, most likely)! It has been a long journey, but for those of you who stuck around after all this time, thank you very much. However, this also means the Development Gashapon will finally be leaving us soon, so be sure to complete your collection while you still have the chance because those items will not be returning!

  • The gilded coin damage effect no longer occurs if Decorations are disabled.
  • The page buttons in the inventory popup have been replaced with a slider.
  • Custom images within maps can now be given custom internal names; these names allow custom images to be used by custom server settings.
  • The Scythe's sprite has been updated.
    • This includes all of its retextures as well.
